Spirit of God or Spirit of the World

"Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God." (1 Corinthians 2:12)

We are spiritual beings. We are influenced by the different activities around us and what we become is a result of those constant tugs in our spirit. There is the world constantly trying to get us. It allures us with money, fame and positions. When we yield our soul (intellect, emotions and will) to the spirit of the world, we get transformed into its nature and we become carnal. It's therefore important to understand which spirit we carry. Is it the Spirit of God or the spirit of the world? In the first century philosophical discourses, spirit mediums held an important place. Thus St. Paul constantly reiterates the difference between a child of God led by His Spirit and a person who is led by the flesh (spirit of the world).

Our character reveals whose we are and who influences us. Jesus the wisdom of God was hidden to the rulers of the world as the Spirit of God didn't reveal it to them. When we have the Spirit of God in us, He reveals the deep things of God to us and gives us a knowledge of the things that are freely given to us of God. A man led by the Spirit of God makes it a passion to know more about God. The understanding of the precepts of God and the liberty which one enjoys in Christ helps us to completely love the Lord and escape from the corruption of the world. The Holy Spirit is given to us to understand more about God and His gifts available to us freely in Christ.
